Plot Synopsis : Han-Na is a very big girl with a warm heart. She is also gifted with an unbelievable voice from God. Han-Na has always wanted to be a pop-singer, but due to her appearance, could only work as a faceless singer. She provides the vocals for a popular singer named Ami, a beautiful young lady that can’t carry a note to save her life.
Also, Han-Na is in love with Ami’s music producer, Sang-June, but it is a one-sided love. One day, Han-Na is invited to Sang-June’s birthday party and receives a red dress from him to wear to his party. Han-Na is excited, yet scared. The dress is revealing and quite extravagant. With her very large figure, she is not sure if she could wear such an outfit. She does eventually go to the birthday party in the red dress, but is mortified when petite Ami appears in the same red dress. During the course of the birthday party, Han-Na absorbs more emotional trauma and she simply disappears……..
One year later, after Han-Na’s extreme makeover (major plastic surgery), Han-Na takes on a new identity and becomes Jenny. Jenny has a near perfect body and face. Nobody recognizes her, even her best friend. Meanwhile, the producer Sang-Jung is searching for a replacement singer for Ami, but can’t find anyone close to the talents of Han-na. Han-na as Jenny, now comes back into the picture and auditions for the job. Sang-Jung is immediately floored by her. She has the absolute beauty and that stunning voice. Soon afterwards, her dream that Sung-June will fall in love with her, is about to come true. Unfortunately, Ami is now jealous of her and feels threatened by her sudden success. She researches into Jenny’s background and comes up with the truth about her true identity. Will this ruin Jenny’s career?
Movie Review : If I had to describe this movie in only a few words, I would say that 200 Pounds Beauty is just a fun movie to watch. The story is simple, a woman who is overweight and unattractive, yet has a warm heart, becomes an almost perfect beauty via extensive plastic surgery. Most of the more amusing scenes are about how people treat her differently. Yet with this simple story, 200 Pounds Beauty has attracted more than 5 million viewers in Korea and the movie is still doing well at the box office. The movie is even beating The Restless (Joong-Chun), which cost a lot more to make and has a far larger marketing budget.
I think there are a few different reasons why 200 Pounds Beauty can attract so many people. First thing is that the movie keeps its own identity as a comedy. If you are familiar with Korean comedies, you know it will get serious towards the end, but 200 Pounds Beauty doesn’t get too serious. The film cleverly touches people’s heart and mind, but doesn’t forget to make you laugh. It doesn’t make the mistakes like the majority of Korean comedies these days. The worst example of this would be the movie “My Boss, My Hero 2 (Doo Sa Boo Il Che),” which is a comedy for two thirds of the film and then painfully exaggerates the situation and acting for the rest of the film. I guess this is because filmmakers believe dramatic situations can maximize impressions for the viewers when they leave the theater.
Secondly, 200 Pounds Beauty shows in funny ways, what could happen to someone if they receive such an extreme makeover. Like the scene when Jenny and Sang-June are finally getting intimate with each other. When he tries to kiss her, she couldn’t have that moment out of fear for her new surgically altered nose. She is also worried about her enlarged breasts and what he would think of her if he knew they were implants. It’s a bit sad but I think people can understand and sympathize with her situation, which leads the audience into laughter. There are constant episodes like these that keeps the audience laughing.
Finally, the main actress Kim A-Jung, has appeared in just 2 TV dramas and one small movie role, prior to being cast in this film. I was really impressed with her performance. Interesting enough, before she was cast as Jenny, the filmmakers recommended many other famous actresses like Soo-Ae, Go So-Young, etc. They all turned down the role, so fortunately for Kim A-Jung, she was cast as Han-Na. After watching 200 Pounds Beauty, I couldn’t imagine the character of Han-Na without her. She was simply brilliant in the movie and the other actors also did their parts very well. I couldn’t stop laughing during the funny scenes with Sung-Dong Il. With Joo Jin-Mo (the music producer and love interest of Han-na/Jenny), I did wonder why he hasn’t gotten more attention as an actor.
I actually watched 200 Pounds Beauty twice. The first time, I laughed so much that I really couldn’t remember the details. By the second viewing, I did realize that the songs Han-na and Jenny sang in the movie were awesome. I hardly ever buy cd’s, but I am considering buying the soundtrack to this movie. 200 Pounds Woman is the kind of movie that will have you laughing out loud and also bopping your head along to the soundtrack. The movie is just a wonderful film that did make me wonder what would happen if I did such an extreme makeover like Han-Na…….

i watched the movie so many times. yes, it is only a simple, funny movie. but i really like it alot coz it gives people confidence within themselves.even though you are ugly and fat, you have something that nobody can take away from you. you are beautiful and thin, but you have nothing in you, its just non sense. another thing, when it comes to love, you would anything, even changing your whole body for someone to notice you! haha it is funny but has sense… nice songs too.. :-)

by the way, i dont think the movie sends the signal that plastic surgery is okay.
they already phrased it clearly in one of the scenes, plastic surgeons are hated, and she only wanted to change herself, hoping that she will be loved, which she isn’t.
so technically, it brings plastic surgery down.

I think Sang Jun said that he doesnt think Hanna is interested in him anymore but he also said that he is starting to love her more than before. However, Hanna says, he is not trying hard enough and she takes his water bottle and drinks it. I dont know if that means they will be together or not but I hope they will. I do agree that they are on equal footing but the tables are turn this time and I think Hanna is the one in control now
The thought never crossed my mind David, but I assumed they were back together but now on more equal footing. Hanna not being burdened by her secret and also having a successful career. Sang-Jun’s feelings were less clear at the end, but judging by his eyes & expression as he watched her sing that last song I would bet they would end up together again of they weren’t already.
Just wondering for those who have seen the ending, was it implied that they are going to be together? I was watching with my mom and she said yeah they are together but when I first watched it I thought they werent end up together. Let me know what are your opinions.

I just saw this at the NY Korean Film Festival 2007. The director was there so it made the viewing much more interesting to say the list. This is an excellent film and like the original review mentions it is really funny though not as funny as My Sassy Girl (MSG) but with less melodrama like MSG. For the most part the film is excellent however there are few questions I had:
1. Did she fall in love with her manager because of his handsomeness? If so then it begs to question whether he would have loved her as her former self? While love is not skin deep it does raise that issue. So a beauty for a beauty.
2. The ending was fitting however just 1 song? It must have been amazing for the crowd to just see one song and then feel satisfied in the concert. I would have felt cheated.
Good film and highly recommended.

I enjoyed this movie 3 mins from when it first started, im not much into foreign films but my friend made me sit down and watch it, I coulndt stop, and i wanted to watch it over and over. I think it’s a funny but warm-hearted film and enjoyable to watch.

I finally got around to watching this movie and I must say that it was a fun movie to watch. The theme on the other hand was another matter. While reading through these comments I’m surprised nobody else found the “plastic surgery can lead to happiness” idea to be slightly disturbing.

Leslie : The singer for the title track “Maria” is actually the actress that played the role of Jenny/Hana, which is Kim A-Jung. She seems to be getting a lot of popularity for this role in Asia. I watched on the local news here about the premiere of 200 Pounds Beauty in Vietnam recently and the movie seems to have a lot of fans over there, even before the movie premiered.

the movie was better than i expected (i thought it was a full-on shallow movie but it wasn’t- it has great message behind it too, also~ great soundtrack too. the leading actress is a pretty good singer despite not being a singer herself.

rhinorider7 : the vocal style and background is kind of an easy giveaway. the first song performed in the movie by ami was jacket jackson’s “miss you much” off of rhythm nation. :)
totally unrelated…but there was a loveholic song on the soundtrack …called ” 슈퍼스타 [Super Star]” from their first album Florist.
I was in Korea around 2002 and attended a film festival called Pifan. I didnt really know much about it at the time but decided attend and the only movie playing was a british film called “28 days later.” Anyways there was a band that came on stage after the movie and played a full concert. I never heard of them before but I did know one song they sang which was called “Loveholic” (I heard it in all the shops during that summer)..and interesting enough the name of the band was Loveholic as well.
I kind of fell head over heals over the song with its really simple melodies. The band went on to finish their set with an absolutely kickass cover of Abba’s “Dancing Queen” !!! After that I was hooked on them. More commercial than things I normally listen but still I think they are one of the best Kpop bands around. Hopefully more people will check them out. And getting back to 200 Pounds Beauty…they do a pretty kickass cover of Blondie’s “Maria” that was sung by Kim A-Jung (the main actress) in 200 Pounds Beauty.
they also contributed a song to absolutely great film…Hana and Alice!

The movie is a must watch, front part of the show is great, and latter part i am in love with hanna, the innocent character in the show.

Just watched 200 pounds beauty and yes it was a blast. Kind of embarrased to say but I even liked that hip-hop version of “Stand By Me” they did :) Strangely enough they left that track off of the sountrack.

I don’t like and rarely watch Korean movies, their long soap tv operas and endless rumours and babbling.
Indeed i reluctantly watched this movie as tehere was no better alternative in the theater.
But about this movie now i have a different thought.
However this was advertised as a comedy as i was watching this movie i had been thinking about some of the human traits and social behaviours.
I saw some people wiping tear drops from their eyes, in the cinema.
This is a fine movie. Good luck for the crew and producers.
Soon i will watch the second time.

OMG. I will be buying this movie soon. I’m just so excited to watch this movie. I’ve been watching the previews over and over again. Everytime I watch them, it cracks me up so hard. Maybe I was high off of the Kimchi and dried squid when I watched this movie, but during the movie I couldn’t help noticing this whole man vs. nature theme going on in the movie.
Primarily, whenever the surgeons were shown, they were always in white lab coats and white background - almost a heavenly portrayal. So I was kind of wondering if this was symbolic of some kind of man vs nature kind of theme going on in the movie. I kind of laughed it off though, thinking this is just a comedy and probably not.
But towards the end of the film, when Jenny was about to do her big concert, the song that she sang was……
…Belinda Carlisle’s “Heavan is A Place On Earth.”
Appropriately enough she broke down in tears and couldn’t finish the song.
Also whenever I visit Korea, there always seem to be one song that is played everywhere. That song this past winter was definitely the theme song for 200 Pounds Beauty, where the girl repeats “Mariaaa…I’ve been Mariaaa”
