Crystal 1.0.0 - Window Decoration for KDE (Linux)
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment

Well having had the same desktop for a few months (that is an eternity for me) I browsed through the kde-look.org website and looked for something new. I checked out a window decoration theme called “Crystal” that gives a sharp glossy look to the top window bar in the active application and for the background applications, gives them a nice transparent blend appearance. It may seem to be a trivial thing, but after using it for a few minutes, it really gave the computer a “driving a new car feeling.” So as you can tell I was extremely happy with that. Yes you can achieve the same effect with deKorator, but I can’t stand that thing, just don’t have the patience to tiddly wink with that for hours to get something I want. Also, with Crystal 1.0.0 when your mouse hovers over the minimize/maximize/close buttons on the top right of each application, it will glow with either a blue or red tint (small thing, but very neat). The process is as simple as downloading the appropriate package file for your distribution. I chose the generic tar ball file and just executed a few simple commands in the terminal (in the directory where the file was extracted) :
$ ./configure –prefix=`kde-config –prefix`
$ make
(as root) # make install
and voila you may then proceed to pick the Crystal window decoration theme in your kde control panel.
The Crystal window decoration theme for linux can be downloaded from this page on kde-look.org.
For color schemes I chose “Black” which can be found on this page on kde-look.org.
For a full size screenshot of my desktop, it can bee seen here.

Interview : Turk Dietrich from Belong
Posted by luna6 | 4 Comments

Free Downloads : Belong’s “I Never Lose. Never Really”
LP6 : I read that a few tracks on the album the Telefon Tel Aviv people were involved, how did you hook up with them?
Turk : I’ve been knowing Josh Eustis since the late 90’s. We met through Charlie Cooper…Charlie and I actually went to high school(Archbishop Shaw) together. Josh and I have been producing other artists for quite some time, and we also have our own collaborative creative project that is in the works. If you peep the credits of the last Telefon record you’ll see that i did some work on it…..It was only natural that Josh would lend a hand in a few places on our record.
LP6 : How would you describe growing up on the West Bank? (I grew up there as well…)
Turk : I had a blast growing up on the West Bank. Even though the WB is quite big, it really does have a small town feel in many ways. I know so many people on the WB it’s crazy.
LP6 : Care to recommend a good place on the West Bank to grab a beer at?
Turk : Unfortunately, I don’t go out much on the WB…i mostly go out out uptown and downtown.
LP6 : Did you play at SXSW this year and if so how did the shows go?
Turk : We did indeed play SXSW this year and the show went well. The venue wasn’t quite right for us but it still went over. SXSW is kind of a sham at the end of the day….more jive industry bullshit happening there than actual music fandom….but you can catch some good stuff there if you look hard enough. We saw Tony Conrad perform Four Violins in a church….it was amazing!!
LP6 : Having never seen your live performances, curious how you translate the sounds of the album into a live concert?
Turk : Mike has a ton of effects and stomp boxes which he plays guitar through. I play mellotron with a midi controller and manipulate various sounds and textures with the controller via a laptop. We also have a video projection which is crucial to sucking you in and creating the atmosphere for the show. Also, the next incarnation of the live show will actually be 3, possibly 4 people on stage. 3 people playing guitars and one person playing a keyboard/modular effects rig.
LP6 : What music have you been listening to these days?
Turk : Tons….too much to list…but to name some: shrubbery, animal collective, six organs of admittance, bibio, boards of canada, new jackie o motherfucker, parson sound, mi and l’au, the birdtree, j.k & company, anthony rother, john frusciante, the pretty things, t la rock, coil, france gall…….
LP6 : What were some of the more memorable live show that you have seen?
Turk : Nine Inch Nails during the Self-Destruct tour In 94 was life changing for me. It was beyond loud, semi-theatrical, threatening…just amazing. It also helps that The Downward Spiral is one of the most amazing albums to boot. It still sounds ahead of the curve 12 years later. Too bad most indie kids haven’t even heard it, or they are just too hip to hear it….doesn’t help either that the latest nin record is a big turd. Other shows that had a profound effect on me: Lightening Bolt, Autechre, Animal Collective and sonic youth.
LP6 : Could you explain a little bit about the creative process behind your songs, specifically “I Never Lose, Never Really,” the first time hearing that, I just kept thinking “Holy Shit!”
Turk : Thanks…Actually, so much went into that track it would take me forever to describe all the processes. Here is interesting note though: at one point that track was 10 minutes long….. but eventually we realized that we were smoking rocks and shortened it to what it is now.
LP6 : Any ideas when the next album will be made?
Turk : We hope that we can have the next album completed by early next year.
LP6 : Do you have any plans to work with vocalists? If so. who would be some people you would like to work with?
Turk : There are actually vocals in I NEVER LOSE. NEVER REALLY. Mike performed them….maybe there will be more one day.
LP6 : Also, I will let you know that I do a mean karaoke version of “Hey Jude,” if you are interested?
Turk : Very curious…
LP6 : From tours that you have done, what was the most memorable show that you have done?
Turk : This past tour we played the Knitting Factory in NY. The show was sold out, and it seemed like everyone in the audience was on the same page with us during our performance. Great show and great crowd.
LP6 : Ever encountered a hostile audience?
Turk : Not yet…but I’m sure we will at some point.
LP6 : Had any odd jobs prior to working in Belong?
Turk : I tended bar and waited tables at Cannons on the WB for 8 years. Mike had worked at Major Video for quite a while.
LP6 : Were in you in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, if so, can you describe a little bit about your experience?
Turk : Mike and I fled to Atlanta that Saturday night. There’s not much to say that hasn’t already been said. As everything unfolded before our eyes on TV, we were just in complete shock. It was the weirdest and most surreal week of our lives.
LP6 : Are you a fan of technology?
Turk : Of course….
Luna6 : Do you prefer Windows, Mac, or Linux?
Turk : Mac
Luna6 : What do you think of Myspace?
Turk : Myspace at the end of the day is a big joke. Far too many people are taking it seriously and living their lives on Myspace. It has it’s uses but far too much has been invested into it.
LP6 : What are some places in New Orleans that you are most of fond of?
Turk : Molly’s on The Market, Shogun, Pho Bang on the WB, Meng Ting, St. Joes, Crescent City Steakhouse
LP6 : Ah, so you’re a fan of vietnamese food?
Turk : Indeed. Having eaten pho all over the country, it’s safe to say the pho at Pho Bang on the West Bank is the best in the U.S. I also really like Tan Dinh on Belle Chase HWY. Nine Roses has some good dishes as well.
LP6 : Who are some of your favorite bands that you would recommend?
Turk : aphex twin, sonic youth, broadcast, this heat, depeche mode, circulatory system, cocteau twins, gang starr, model 500, gas, john fahey, ministry, oval, prince, silver apples, piper at the gates of dawn…i could go on but i’ll stop……
LP6 : If you were not a muscian what would you be doing?
Turk : Poker.
LP6 : Had any good look at Harrah’s or Boomtown?
Turk : Always…. but Boomtown is a human garbage disposal…
LP6 : Thanks Turk!

eBay Inc. v. MercExchange, L.L.C., 74 U.S.L.W. 3529
Posted by luna6 | 1 Comment

The Supreme Court will hear today eBay’s petition against a lower federal court’s ruling in favor of a a permenant injunction against eBay. The injunction pertains to the “Buy it Now” feature on eBay that MercExchange claims violated their patent. The significance of this case is whether a patent troll can gain a permanent injunction against the infringing party, even if the parties are soley in dispute over compensation, even if the case is still pending in the appeals court, and even if the patent holder has just been sitting on the patent.
Both sides have heavy backers, MerchExchange with the backing of the federal government (Solicitor General’s Office) and the pharmaceutical industry (all about patents) and eBay has the support of the tech industry (scared sillly something like this could happen to them).
Being a 2nd year law school student, I thought I would apply my knowledge in constitutional law and handicap the likely responses of our Supreme Court justices in eBay Inc. v. MercExchange, L.L.C. :

Ruth Ginsberg (eBay) : “I dont want to wait for days to find out whether I won my refridgerator magnets, bootleg DVD’s, and counterfeit Prada Bags.”
Clarence Thomas : “I withold judgement until I find out whether this decision could have any harmful effects upon the distribution of porn.”
Antonin Scalia (MerchExchange) : “War is war, eBay lost, scew em.”
Stephen Breyer (eBay) : “No..screw you Scalia. Telling me I should put footnotes in my decisions…”
Samuel Alito (MerchExchange) : “If Scalia says so, its good enough for me…”
Anthony Kennedy (eBay) : “I like to keep’em guessing…remember Planned Parenthod v. Casey?”
John Stevens (eBay) : “We should adhere to the ‘rational basis’ test, because back when I was a soldier in World War II, we knew one thing, which was our duty to our country. I love the United States as much today, as I did back when I was a soldier in World War II …um what was my point…oh yeah that I was a soldier in World War II.”
John Roberts (MercExchange) : “Set up a military tribunal, if they dont like it, shoot em.”
David Souter (eBay) : “Guys. can we hurry this up …I’m still looking for that punk that mugged me.”

Taking Free Software to the Farmers and Fields of India
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment
![]()
Linux Journal has posted an interesting article on how Open-Source Software (Linux, Apache, MySQL…etc) is helping an Indian Website, aQua.org., pass on much needed information to rural farmers in India. One of the beauties of FOSS (free open source software) is that technology can be used as a liberating tool, rather than creating another barrier between the haves and have nots (hello Microsoft?..and no i am not a commie). Excerpts from the article :
In addition to connecting users, aAqua.org also provides crop recommendations archived by keywords, a search tool to see if a particular question already has been answered and a “crop doctor” with photographs of diseased crops, archived by keywords. The bhav puchiye (ask the price) feature has practical use. Market rates from across India are displayed for farmers and agro-traders.
When asked if Free/Libre and open-source software made the aAqua project possible, Dr. Ramamritham said, “Very much so.” The software behind the aAqua Web site is based on lab-developed algorithms for translation, caching and the like that use Java, JSP and Java Servlets technology. The application currently is deployed on a Tomcat Web server, version 5. The software also can run from any Servlet container that is compatible with JSP 1.2 and Servlet 2.3. The Oracle 9i database, with Unicode UTF-8 support, is used as the site’s backend software.
aAqua also has been configured to work with MySQL, with Unicode support (version 4.1 onwards). aAqua can be viewed using any popular Web browser, including Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Opera and so on. The digital library software uses C++, Perl and Java and is deployed on a Jakarta Apache server, version 2.0.52.

Universal to try Film Download Service
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment

In a report by the LA Times, Universal Pictures are set to launch a download serivce for movies, partnering with Lovefilm (Britsh Netflix type of company). Starting on April 10, Universal will release 35 titles including the new “King Kong” for download in Britain. In addition to being able to download the film, purchasers will recieve a hard copy DVD in the mail a few days later. As interesting as the idea is, the catch is the cost of the movies. At $34.72 per movie, it is doubtful that there will be much demand for the service, regardless of the DVD being mailed to the purchaser.

Wired magazine is reporting that some very clever people have been able to :
“…Grass-roots software and web developers have found ways to tap into XM Satellite Radio Holdings’ and Sirius Satellite Radio’s websites to stream music channels onto Windows-powered smartphones and other devices….
To be sure, the addressable market is tiny. Users have to own relatively new Microsoft Windows Mobile-powered smartphones or Pocket PC handheld devices and troll online message boards to locate the software or website links.
As a service to paying subscribers, XM and Sirius offer only a limited selection of their music channels on the web. Sirius’ hugely popular shows by ribald radio host Howard Stern, for example, are not available on its website.”
