Apple Booster for your iPod…can of Altoids required
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment

A lady known on the internet as ladyada has reportedly documented a method of using 2 AA batteries in an empty altoid can, with a whole lot of crafty ingenuity, to make an extended battery pack for the Apple iPod. The altoids battery pack can effectively double the playback time of your iPod. Some soldering tools are required but it is reportedly doable for beginners. More information and detailed diagrams can be viewed here.
The battery life is reported to increase by these margins when used with the altoids recharger :
iPod video (tested, using alkaline batteries): 3hrs more video (1 full recharge)
iPod shuffle (unverified): 60 hours more (5 full recharges)
iPod mini (unverified): 26 hours more (1.5 full recharges)

Ubuntu Dapper Review
Posted by luna6 | 127 Comments

Tomorrow (June 1) Ubuntu should be releasing their final version of Dapper and to get ready for that, this review of the release candidate will cover some of the qualities of the new operating system as well as tips on getting Dapper optimized for desktop usage. As for my impressions of Dapper itself, I would enthusiastically say that Dapper is amazing! Without a doubt, I can say positively that this is the best Linux distro I have ever used. From the simplicity of having to download just one cd iso image for installation, to having the option to have the installation discs mailed to you at no cost, and to the beauty and speed of the apt-get system, as well as a promised 5 year support cycle, and the best community forum for the times when you are stumped on a problem, makes Ubuntu Dapper the best Linux operating system I have used to date. Some of the noteworthy changes for Ubuntu’s Dapper :
* The 386 installation disc uses the LiveCD method for installation
* Faster Boot Time as well as faster Gnome start process
* New Artwork with improved Human theme
* Refined GDM Login Screen
* Better Menu Organization
* Update notifier modified with new look and restart notification dialog box
* Improved Add/Remove application to help new users install applications
* Graphical .deb package installer (gdebi)
* New Log Out Dialog
* Multimedia backend now uses Gstreamer 0.10
* Window Server now uses X-org 7.0
* Gnome 2.14.1
* Support for new hardware (SATA & SATA RAID devices)
* Improved Wireless support
* Improved Plug-n-Play for usb devices
*Disclaimer this article was written for Linux enthusiasts. If you are coming from the Windows side and the command line seems intimidating you can accomplish all of the updates and installs from Synaptic or Adept package manager applications. Both have nice graphics and require nothing more than checking the box next to the program you want to install and then selecting the install button and you are set to go. I prefer the command line because it is faster.

Earthlink to provide Wi-Fi to New Orleans
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment
The New Orleans City Council has granted a license to Earthlink to provide Wi-Fi coverage to the city of New Orleans. The service is set to launch by Sept. 1 , covering 15 square miles of the city initially, the areas expected to recieve the wi-fi coverage will be uptown, downtown, the French Quarter, and Algiers. Earthlink will provide a slower but free service that will provide 300kbs speeds as well as a faster 1 mbs speed connection that will cost approximately $22 a month. While the city of New Orleans has already been providing free wi-fi in areas of the French Quarter and the Central Business District since Hurricane Katrina, they were under pressure to discontinue the service by other broadband providers, specifically BellSouth. Now that the service will be provided by Earthlink any complaints by BellSouth will be moot.
The wireless system that Earthlink implements will be built off of the free wireless service the city started. Users will receive wireless signals from MetroMesh wireless routers affixed on the tops of light poles. Motorola Canopy wireless links will bundle up signals from several blocks and send them to a central station. Analysts estimate that EarthLink is going to spend at least $3 to $4 million to install Internet to the 15 square miles of the city. Earthlink may expand the network in the following year depending on the voume of residents moving back to other areas.

As nice as the wireless system may be for browsing the net. The part I am intrigued with is the possibility to use the free 300 kbs wifi service with upcoming wi-fi voip phones like the one pictured above, made by D-Link. For the cost of the voip service, maybe $25 a month, you should be able to recieve and make outgoing calls anywhere in the 15 square mile wifi area covered by Earthlink, on your own home wi-fi network, as well as free wi-fi public hotspots like at your local P.J.’s or Rue De La Course coffee shops. That will be sweet indeed. (Au Revoir Sprint)

Google’s Picasa ported to Linux via Wine
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment

The Big ‘G’ has offically announced that a a pre-beta version of Picasa is available for download for the Linux Operating System. Although there are already robust photo manager’s available for Linux (Digikam and F-Spot), it is nice to have another option and one that is already familiar to a lot of people coming over from the darkside. You can download the Linux version here. It should be noted that the Linux version of Picasa is actually not a native port, but runs off of Wine. The cool thing about downloading the Linux version is that you dont even need Wine installed. Depending on which distro you are using it should be as easy as downloading and double clicking the .deb or .rpm file and it installs the Wine libraries and the Picasa program itself. I did not have Wine installed on my Ubuntu Dapper computer and Picasa installed with no problems whatsoever. The only limitations on the Linux version are :
* Picasa for Linux is currently available only in the U.S., with an English interface.
* Google’s Hello photo-messaging application is Windows only, so it’s not currently integrated with Picasa for Linux.
* CD burning isn’t supported in Picasa for Linux. The button will be grayed out in the interface.
* Similarly, the backup feature is not supported.
* There’s currently no Export to TiVo® feature.
