If you stopped by LP6 yesterday, you may have noticed a blank white screen. Sorry about that, it was caused by a little confusion between myself and the webmaster for LP6. I did make a comment about him in a Giant Drag posting and that may have ticked him off a bit. I won’t mention him again..for a few days at least.

Also we will be doing an interview with the Clientele in a few days. Anybody interested in the band feel free to hit the Contact link at the top of the webpage and submit your questions.

westerndigital-logo.jpg

wdfEnterprise_SATA_ADFD.jpgWestern Digital has settled a class action lawsuit concerning the deceptive labeling of their hard drives. The problem occured when consumers bought hard drives with a stated capacity. As an example, let’s say you purchased a Western Digital 250 gigabyte hard drive. After you install the drive into your computer, you will notice that the drive size has become 231 gigabytes. The reason for this is that Western Digital, along with most hard drive manufacturers, calculates the storage capacity of their hard drives using the decimal system. This in contrast to virtually all operating systems that calculates the capacity of the hard drives with the binary system. As hard drives become larger, this discrepancy grows larger. For kilobytes, the discrepancy between binary and decimal measurements is 2.4%, while for megabytes this discrepancy grows to 5%, and for gigabytes this discrepancy grows to a meaningful 7.5%. This means that when you buy a Western Digital hard drive that claims to hold 250 gigabytes of data, you are in actuality getting a hard drive with the capacity to hold 231 gigabytes of data.

Although Western Digital has not admitted to any wrong doing, they have agreed to comply with these injunctive relief measures:

Furthermore, Western Digital has agreed to pay $500,000 in fees and expenses to San Francisco lawyers Adam Gutride and Seth Safier, who filed the class action law suit last year.

In regards to the settlement, I must say that it seems misguided at best and silly on closer examination. People were deceived into buying hard drives that they thought would hold a certain amount of data, but in actuality received a hard drive that holds noticeably less space for their data. To compensate these consumers, Western Digital agrees to offer free software (backup software) that will result in those users using even more space on their mislabeled hard drives. When these mislabeled hard drives become full, more likely than not, these consumers will have to buy another hard drive. This will benefit Western Digitally significantly and seems to be more of an ingenious marketing scheme, rather than a compensatory measure.

Another problem with the agreement is that the software available for download will be for Windows only. Consumers that bought Western Digital drives for their Apple/Linux/Unix/FreeBSD computers are simply left without any recourse. (This would be analogous to a pharmaceutical company that sold a defective drug and offers to compensate the class by offering another drug that works for only one gender or race.)

A far more equitable solution would have been to offer a 7.5% refund to the class members or a 7.5% rebate for their next hard drive purchase. If you are one of the potential class action members and feel the settlement is unfair you can email the attorneys for the class action lawsuit here and more information on the settlement can be found here.

panty opsoyo!

Posted by Katie | Leave a Comment

argh, my washing machine’s been broken for six days. six!

so i go up to mr. lee, the third-or-fourth in command at my hagwon, to voice my concern. he’s in charge of keeping whitey happy. the one to whom i hand over my bills, smile apologetically and gesture at the overdue date, and he sets off to the bank for me without a reprimand, not even a hint of a disgruntled “aasssssh…” he’s the guy who’s already come twice after work, 10pm,  to unlock my apartment when my keys were MIA. hey, i don’t have a father figure over here, just mr. lee, a thirty-year-old korean-korean from bucheon, with his fondness for pinstriped silver trousers and for swiping the vitamin-c tablets we use as preschoolers’ placebos. i eat them like candy, too, though.

anyway, i locate him and mime the damage: “washing machine….it is….broken. water is…..here and…it’s very not good.” ok, ok. he go today to fix.

that was last tuesday. wed., thursday pass. friday. “very sorry…very busy. machine….monday,” he shucks and grins. feeling panicked, i attempt cross-cultural communication to illustrate my need.

“but mr. eeeeeeeeee!” i whine in typical korean fashion, clicking my camel-colored italian heels against the woodgrain floor, “panty opsoyoooooooo!” (i don’t have a panty!)

looking back, all i can hope for is that i didn’t point to my crotch to get the point across. i was scared, i was stressed, and sometimes, while expressing yourself in another language, you don’t realize the deeper meanings of your message. kind of like how the kids are always waving their middle fingers around and saying fokk-ayou.

on the subject. it should be noted that every underwear type here is “a panty.” boys, too. it amuses me to no end. i found this out while getting the students to describe a photo of a native from papua new guinea. “teacher, teacher. he is wearing….a bone necklace.” ok, but what else is he wearing? “he is wearing….a….panty!” giggle, giggle.

i’m amused too, and decide to take it further. “ok! who is wearing a panty? raise your hand!” it’s a sea of hands, in room full of boys. all except joon-yeop, who looks a little disdainful of his male classmates. you tell ‘em, joon-yeop, i think. you don’t wear no stinkin’ panty.

he speaks confidently. “teacher…i no wearing panty. i….am wearing….soccer panty.”

whatever; i didn’t ask to see it…

Flashphone F4K

Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment

Flashphone-BlueYellow.jpg

Pretty cool device that costs $39.90 (128 MB), $54.90 (256 MB), or $69.90 (512 MB) depending on the size of the built in memory. The Flashphone works as a regular USB flash drive where you can save your data onto the device. In addition, the device works as USB bluetooth dongle, so you can use bluetooth devices with your laptop/desktop computer. The most novel aspect of the Flashphone is the software built in to the device to allow you to make calls through Skype, MSN, or Google Talk. Basically when you are somewhere like at a cafe with wifi, you can plug the Flashphone into your laptop and call your friends through Skype, with the appropriate bluetooth headset. Very neat. More information can be found here.

Free Downloads : Another One Goes By, We’re Already There, and Louise

LP6: “We’re Already There” is one hell of an album. Was it a difficult album to make?

Quentin: Thank you, I’m very happy with it myself. It wasn’t any more difficult to make than any of the other records that I’ve made. It was actually much easier because I know a little more about the process of recording. That being said, every record that i’ve made has had it’s challenges. It’s never easy. If it is, you’re probably doing something wrong.

LP6: Do you expect your next album to take as long to make as “We’re Already There?”

Quentin: No. I’ve scheduled some time in July, and expect to complete a new record by the fall and if everything falls into place, it will come out in the Spring. To me that sounds ambitious, but i’ve been working on ideas for a long time, and am very much ready to see them to completion. But i’ll take as much time as it takes to make a record that makes me happy. Also, for the record, “we’re already there” only took in total about 8 months to record (which is probably about an average amount of time to make a record). The rest of the time was spent waiting for a label to put it out.

LP6: The track “We’re Already There” has a bit of a different sound then the rest of the album and yet, it is the title of the album. What made you name the album “We’re Already There”?

Quentin: I feel like it was a step forward. That song was recorded mostly at my studio and was essentially an improvised piece between myself, Kurt Heasley, Mike Walker and Steven Keller. We did it in one night. Kurt and Steve didn’t even know we were recording. I brought it home and immediately added vocals by mumbling along with the music, and then added a few other tracks later, but didn’t change the structure at all. I felt like the line “we’re already there” was an answer to something that i had been thinking about for a long time. Sitting on a record for a year and a half created a feeling of stagnation, discontent, and general discouragement. I felt that i had recorded the best record of my life and the people i played it for LOVED it, but there wasn’t one record company that wanted anything to do with it. It was a grueling process (far more difficult than recording). I had decided at one point that i was going to self release it, forget about it, and be done with this project as a commercial endeavor. It was that frustrating. But then as I came to terms with the situation I was in, I realized that relying on other people to do stuff for you isn’t necessarily the easiest or smartest thing to do. Then I became aware of everything that I had around me and realized that I live in a place that I like, I have a lot of friends, I have a recording studio, a lot of resources, and I have the ability to put out my own records if necessary, so why am I even relying on anyone else to do anything for me? And as soon as I came to that realization and became content with my situation, several labels offered to put out the record. Strange how things work.

LP6: New American Apathy is an amazing song. I have read that you wrote it after 9/11..does the song still have the same meaning for you today?

Quentin: Yeah, I wrote that as a reaction to the reaction of 9/11. People were sent into complete hysterics over that situation, like they were completely unaware of it being a possibility prior to it happening, like the United States has ever done anything deserving of that kind of attack. We’ve killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people in the past few decades alone, which has created an enormous amount of global hostility toward us. I could write an entire essay here on that subject alone, but for anyone interested, I’ll reference Christopher Hitchens’ “The Case Against Henry Kissinger” as a start. Admittedly though, i was as stunned and horrified, as anyone else the day that it happened, but the way that most people just rolled over and let the government have carte blanche because of this one attack and the unchecked nationalism that followed, was much scarier to me than the prospect of another terrorist attack. We’ve been held hostage (by the current administration and the complicit media) for the past 5 years over it, and not one other actual terrorist event has happened on US soil since. That being said, i have complete sympathy for the families of the victims, because it is devastating to lose someone that you love.

LP6: You repeat that one stanza three times without any type of chorus, how did the song evolve into that form?

Quentin: I wrote it all in one sitting, when I thought about adding a bridge or a chorus, it seemed cheap and insincere. So I left it as is, and tried to make the music around the lyrics interesting enough to carry the song. Also, I think the lyrics are semi-confounding enough to bear repeating.

LP6: Another One Goes By is up there with anything I have heard in a long time….having an instant “that’s a classic song” feel to it. Where did you get the inspiration to write that a song?

Quentin: I don’t really know, I wrote it very quickly one day. I came up with the opening line just after I woke up one morning while laying in bed with my girlfriend, and it all just kind of flowed from there. It’s the closest I’ve ever come to expressing a coherent idea in a song. It’s very reflective of my view of the blurred line between dreams/reality.

LP6: What were you impressions of the Walkmen’s version of that song?

Quentin: I think it’s fantastic. I’m flattered that they covered it.

LP6: Is there a main theme in your lyrics? How do you work with lyrics?

Quentin: I could write about dreams, sleeping, existentialism, love and relationships forever and never tire of the subjects. I mostly write lyrics in fragments, and then put them together in a collage that makes some sense. But every once in awhile i’ll sit down and write an entire set of lyrics kind of stream of consciousness style. That can be very gratifying, but it always requires a little reworking to get something that i’m happy with.

LP6: Have you ever read a particular book or a passage or a quote that influenced one of your songs?

Quentin: Several. “The Island of The Day Before” by Umberto Eco was a huge influence on my 1st album. “Expanded Cinema” by Gene Youngblood is a book that has continually inspired me. “Composition in Retrospect” by John Cage is a book that I always read prior to making a new record. Recently “The Power of the Myth” by Joseph Campbell has been incredibly inspirational.

LP6: You were a drummer in another band (Azusa Plane) before starting Mazarin. What were some of your hope and goals with starting Mazarin?

Quentin: I just wanted to make one pop record and release it. My initial idea was to make a very digestible pop record that would be hugely successful, and then I was going to make the weirdest second record that I could think of. It kind of happened like that, except for the hugely successful part of the first record.

LP6: What bands have you been listening to these days that you thoroughly enjoy?

Quentin: Oh my that’s a hard one. I’ve become much less of a listener. There’s current records that i hear and am impressed with, but none that really blow me away. Current bands that I’ve heard that I like are the Clientele, the Concretes, Animal Collective, the Walkmen, Dr. Dog, Caribou, Gnarls Barkley, and Soundteam (another band we toured with this year). There’s also my friends band Bloodfeathers. I recorded their record last year and i think it is astoundingly good. We also recently played 2 shows with the Black Dice in Holland and they completely floored me. The one record that has been blowing my mind is Harry Nilsson’s “Pussy Cats”. The Walkmen asked me to sing on their cover of “Mucho Mungo”, and I listened to the record for the first time on the train ride up to New York to record with them, and was stunned that i had missed it all of these years.

LP6: From the various places that you have visited while touring, which city would be the most memorable and why?

Quentin: There are a lot of them. I love Berlin. Grenada, Spain is lovely. I really like northern Italy in the Alps. Barcelona is wonderful, as is Copenhagen, the Dutch town of Gronnigen, Scotland, Dublin. In the states Marfa, TX, Grass Valley, CA, Monterey, CA, Marin County, CA, Prescott, AZ. There are so many great places. If I had to choose one, it would probably be Berlin. It’s a lovely place. There’s a neighborhood called Prenzlauerberg which is so nice. It’s got the feel of a small village, peaceful, safe, but it’s smack in the middle of Berlin.

LP6: I’m sure you have met a lot of different types of people during your time touring. Which individual that you have met, while on tour, comes to your mind first and why?

Quentin: That’s tough. I met a lot of really wonderful people on this last bit of touring. Spending some time with Kevin Shields was pretty great. We share a manager and he came to one of my acoustic shows in London and we subsequently spent some time together. He’s just a really intelligent, charming and friendly person. He lent me an amp for our UK and European dates, and came to two of our shows. I feel like we’ve got a lot in common, and I felt like I was spending time with a wise sage.

LP6: Can you mention any craziness that occurred during your last tour with the Walkmen?

Quentin: Where do i start? Every day on a Walkmen tour is insanity on some level. We played them at football before our show in Milwaukee. We won 42 - 35. Though by far the craziest night that we’ve ever had with the Walkmen occurred in Montreal during our January tour with them. After the show we played hockey with them in the alley behind the club (we always seem to be engaging in competitive sports). I don’t think there was a clear winner in that game. After that, we all got into our van “the jungle” and drove around Montreal looking for this after party at the W hotel. If you can imagine 10 people in a van blasting who knows what on the stereo, drinking and smoking, and just being totally illegal in general, pulling u turns, driving like insane lunatics. I think it took us 45 minutes to get there, though it was only like 10 minutes away. We pulled up on the curb in front of the W hotel blasting dub with thick smoke and a bunch of wasted idiots pouring out of the van. There were all these finely dressed Canadians. By the looks on the bouncers faces, i thought surely we were going to get arrested, or at the very least beat up. but we told them we were there for the Walkmen afterparty, and they took the van keys parked it for us and ushered us to our reserved area where we then were given the royal treatment of endless shots, bottles of whiskey, and every thing else you can imagine. I’m surprised that we didn’t get arrested.

LP6: When your not making music what do you enjoying doing in your free time?

Quentin: Gardening, playing with my dog, working on my house, sleeping.

LP6: What electronic gadget do you own that you couldn’t live without or would seriously piss you off if you lost it?

Quentin: I don’t own this piece of gear, but I borrow it from a friend. It is a metasonics pulse width modulator. it’s a one of a kind prototype, and it’s magical. I’m not even sure how it works, but it makes things sound amazing.

LP6: Does it scare you as an artist that such a vast amount of music people get these days is through “illegal” means via the Internet?

Quentin: No. There is nothing I can do about it. It is an unstoppable force that will inevitably lead to the death of the music industry, but not the death of music. There are still plenty of people making money playing music.

LP6: If there was a Texas Death Match between the singer from Camera Obscura versus the singer from the Concretes…who would win and why?

Quentin: I don’t know. Don’t really know Camera Obscura that well. I’ll say the lead singer from the Concretes, because I like their music and she looks really salty.

LP6: Could you name a singer or band that you really enjoy listening to, but would surprise other people if they knew you liked them?

Quentin: I love Astrud Gilberto. I don’t know if that’s surprising. I’m also really into some of Alicia Keys stuff, that’s probably more surprising. Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Black Flag. I love their guitar sounds.

LP6: Have you ever tried Kimchi? If so what were your impressions of that dish?

Quentin: Yes, just had it in Vancouver recently. I think it’s delicious. My dad is a connoisseur of sorts. He came back from Korea a few years ago.

LP6: Thank you very much.
