Apple recalls batteries for 15″ MacBook Pros
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment

Apple has posted on there website that certain 15-inch MacBook Pro notebooks sold from February 2006 through May 2006 with the model number A1175 and a 12-digit serial number that ends with U7SA, U7SB or U7SC are being recalled. Any users that purchased those notebooks should get in touch with Apple and seek a replacement. They do note that “The affected batteries do not pose a safety risk. You may continue to use your current battery until a replacement arrives,” which sounds like those batteries just don’t keep their charges. Certainly better than the way Dell is going about doing nothing with their Firecracker notebooks :

Some new features are :
* Message Tags

* Improved New Mail Notification Alerts
* New Windows installer based on Nullsoft Scriptable Install System
* Find As You Type in the message pane
* New combined and improved Add-ons manager for extensions and themes
* Updates to the extension system to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions
Some known Issues :
* Prior to installing Thunderbird 2 Alpha 1, please ensure that the directory you’ve chosen to install into is clean and doesn’t contain any previous Thunderbird installations.
* When upgrading, all your Extensions and Themes will be disabled. This is not an issue, but it may appear to be one (hence its listing here). For rationale, see “Extension and Themes” above.
* The default dictionary is English-only. To add a non-English dictionary, read the installation instructions.
* When switching between using a Global Inbox and using an Inbox for a POP3 account, be sure to make copies of the messages into another folder.
* Message tagging has not been hooked up to the 0-9 keys for easy tagging like the old labels feature. This will be fixed for beta 1.
* For Mac OS X users do nut run the program from Disk Image. Doing this will cause an infinite restart loop.

Google Talk languishing a distant 4th, behind MSN, Yahoo, and AIM, (Google Talk chat software had only 44,000 users in June, according to comScore) has finally updated their Google Talk client to have more robust features. 3 new features added to Google Talk are :
File Transfer
With this top requested new feature, you can send unlimited files and folders to your friends through Google Talk. There is no restriction on the file type or size and the peer-to-peer transfer is fast and reliable.
To send a file with Google Talk:
1. From an active chat window, click the Send Files button.
2. Browse to the file or files you’d like to send (use CTRL-Shift to select more than one file at a time).
3. Click OK. Google Talk will insert your file into the chat session.
Voicemail
If a friend isn’t around to answer your call, now you can leave a voicemail. You can even leave voicemail messages for your friends who don’t use Google Talk–they’ll receive an email with the message attached as an audio file.
Google Talk allows you to leave a voicemail for any of your contacts, whether they’re logged in to Google Talk or not. Ramble on for up to 10 minutes, and they’ll be able to retrieve your message from their Gmail account at any time. You can even send a message straight to their voicemail without first ringing them.
To leave a message, call a contact and let it ring - voicemail will pick up after 4 rings. Or, click the down arrow from any profile card or chat window to access the options menu and select Send voicemail.
Music Status
Listening to music while on Google Talk? Now you can let your friends see what you’re listening to by selecting “Show current music track” in your status menu. Your status message will change when your song does!
If you’d like to show your contacts what music you’re listening to at that very moment, select Show current music track from your status drop-down menu.

Microsoft plans to push IE 7 as an automatic update for Windows XP users
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment
![]()
Cnet is reporting that ….”IE 7 will be delivered in the fourth quarter as a “high priority” update via Automatic Updates in Windows XP, Gary Schare, Microsoft’s director of IE product management, said in an interview Tuesday. Automatic Updates is a Windows feature typically used for security updates, but Microsoft has also used it to push its antipiracy tool WGA Notifications.
“The justification, of course, is the significant security enhancements in IE 7,” Schare said. Microsoft recommends that all Windows users install the new browser when it ships, he added.”
For the people that still are using Internet Explorer, the company that wrote your software even views it as a security risk…so why the hell are you still using it?

Victoria Bergsman of the Concretes goes Solo
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment

In a somewhat terse press release the Concretes announced that their lead singer Victoria Bergsman has left the band to pursue a solo career :
-
The Concretes have announced that lead singer Victoria Bergsman is departing the band to pursue a solo career. The band will continue playing together and are currently drafting songs for a new album. They performed without Bergsman at the Summercase Festival in Spain. They apologise to fans who were hoping to see them perform together.
Victoria Bergsman was an original member of the The Concretes, forming the band with Lisa Milberg (drums / vocals) and Maria Eriksson (guitar / vocals) in Stockholm in 1995. Since that time the band have released two albums, the eponymous debut from 2004 featuring the singles “You Can’t Hurry Love”, “Say Something New” and “Warm Night”; and this year’s “In Colour”. The Concretes’ performance of recent single “On The Radio” on the last series of the Jonathan Ross TV Show is the last time the band will have played together prior to Bergsman’s departure.
Hmm…maybe the question I posed to Quentin Stoltzfus of Mazarin, from this interview, gave Victoria Bergsman the incentive to pursue a solo career?
-
LP6: If there was a Texas Death Match between the singer from Camera Obscura versus the singer from the Concretes…who would win and why?
Quentin: I don’t know. Don’t really know Camera Obscura that well. I’ll say the lead singer from the Concretes, because I like their music and she looks really salty.

The Legends Lucky Star (Labrador / Acid House Kings / Club 8)
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment

The Legends will be dropping their third album Facts And Figures on September 6, 2006. In the meantime they have released a sweet little cd single featuring the track “Lucky Star.” Their label, Labrador, has that song available for free downloads at their website and can be directly downloaded here. The song is sweet and much more upbeat than anything found on their last album Public Radio and should make fans of Acid House Kings or Club 8 really happy, which kind of make sense since the Legends is fronted by Johan Angergard (member of both Club 8 and Acid House Kings). Very catchy single and can’t wait to get my grubby hands on Facts And Figures

The Host
Posted by luna6 | 21 Comments

Movie : The Host / Gwoemul / 괴물
Release Date: July 27, 2006
Country : South Korea
Director: Joon-ho Bong
Starring: Kang-ho Song, Hae-il Park, Du-na Bae
Runtime : 119 Minutes
Editor Rating : 9.0
Plot Synopsis : A Korean Scientist working for the U.S. Army is ordered to dump highly toxic chemicals into the Han River in Seoul, South Korea. Because of that, something in the Han River eventually mutates into a terrifying creature that hunts humans as its prey. One of the first victims of this monster, was a small girl named Hyeon-seo. Her father, Kang-du, works at a food stall on the banks of the Han River and witnesses the monster making his first appearance out of the Han River. Kang-du immediately goes to assist the people that are being attacked by the monster and doesn’t notice his daughter leaving his family’s food stall during this mayhem.
Once he does notice his daughter out on the banks of the river, he runs over to her and tries to flee with her to higher ground. Unfortunately he loses hold of his daughter and soon she is attacked by the monster and is taken away by the beast (presumably killed). Meanwhile Kang-du and his immediate family (his father, brother and sister) are quarantined by the military. A hysteria occurs and the media feeds the public misinformation that the monster is spreading a deadly virus. Kang-du was the only survivor to have gotten in contact with the monster and doctors now fear that he may be carrying a deadly virus.
During his quarantine in the hospital, he receives a phone call on his cell phone from his daughter screaming for help. Nobody at the hospital believes that he did receive that phone call or that she is alive, except for his family. The family members manages to escape the hospital and goes back to the Han River to battle the beast one final time in an attempt to retrieve their Hyeon-Seo.

Movie Review : The Host will no doubt be the most successful film in Korean history. The film is successful on many different layers and makes for one hell of a thrill ride.
First and foremost, the director, Joon-ho Bong, should be credited with making a masterpiece in the genre of high-tech sci-fi horror movies. If you are familiar with Joon-Ho Bong’s previous films like Barking Dogs Don’t Bite (brilliant) and Memories of Murder (very good) you can get an idea for the potential for this film. The Host takes the style of Memories of Murder (the constant rain fall and absolute tension) as well as the film’s two main actors and pumps that style into a movie about a monster, not a serial killer monster as in Memories of Murder, but a mutant monster created by toxic chemicals. The film is directed in a fast paced style that will have you jumping out of your seats on more than a few occasions and during the other times have you clenching your armrests from the suspense.
Kang-ho Song who played Kang-du (the father that lost his daughter to the monster) rocked throughout this film, as he did in Memories of Murder. Kang-ho Song’s counterpart and nemesis in Memories of Murder, Hae-il Park, plays his brother in the Host and he was compelling throughout the Host as the more hot tempered of the two brothers. Bae Du-Na, who appeared in Barking Dogs Don’t Bite, sadly isn’t given as much screen time as the male leads, but she could stand against a wall as a wallflower for 10 minutes in a film and I would be impressed, so no complaints about her role.
The high tech wizardry involved in creating the monster from the Han River was absolutely impressive and as good as anything I have seen from Hollywood. Obviously on the most basic level, the Host is an impressive sci-fi film in the summer blockbuster variety, but note that the heroes in this film are not super soldiers or the military with their high tech weapons. The heroes were ordinary people, battling to save the life of one of their family members from a beast that was ultimately created by the military.
One small complaint about the film, would be the manner in which the other villain, besides the monster, was portrayed. Not quite as blatant as the film Handbando and its negative portrayal of the Japanese, but the portrayal of the U.S. Government was done in such a simpleton manner that it actually detracted from the points the director tried to bring up. An example being the evil U.S. scientist, with his cliched character, that seemed out of place compared with the other qualities of the film. Even though the chemical pollution was based on an actual event, the utterly evil scientist made it harder to fathom that it was based on a real occurance. Besides that, the Host will have you sitting on the edge of your seat for its 2 hour run time and you should definitely check it out at the first opportunity. Start your timers and place your wagers on when this film will be remade by Hollywood.

Fedora ending support for FC1, FC2, Redhat 7.3 and Redhat 9
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment

Fedora is ending the life support for their various legacy operating systems which includes; FC1, FC2, Redhat 7.3 and Redhat 9 when Fedora Core 6 Test 2 is released (expected to be released July 26). Now is the time upgrade your servers and desktops if you are running one of those variants. For the legacy Redhat users, I would recommend you try out Cent OS, which is rebuilt from source packages provided by Red Hat Enterprise Linux and is distributed freely. The latest iso discs can be downloaded from here. For Fedora 1 & 2 users it’s about time time you upgrade to version 5. I have been running FC 5 since the day it was released and find it to be the second best Linux destop distribution (Ubuntu is easily my favorite choice for Linux). If Yum wasn’t so darn slow, I would like FC5 even more. Review of FC5 by yours truly can be read here.
The official Fedora accouncement is posted here :
