ReactOS 0.3.0

Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment

firefox&solitaire.jpg

A neat project going on is ReactOS and they have just released an alpha version of their operating system known as React OS 0.3.0. The goal of the operating system is to be a free open source operating system, but 100% compatible with Windows XP. “ReactOS aims to achieve complete binary compatibility with both applications and device drivers meant for NT and XP operating systems, by using a similar architecture and providing a complete and equivalent public interface.” Being a curious OS geek myself I decided to download the vmware image of ReactOS 0.3.0 and give it a spin. The OS is rightly tagged as alpha software and I did recieve a few blue screen crashes. When the applications worked in ReactOS like Firefox, there was mixed feeling of seeing something neat (foss version of windows) and a warped feeling of going back in time to the good ole days of Windows NT. Regardless, if you are interested in the project the ReactOS webpage can be viewed here.
Links to the downloads : Live CD, Install CD, VMware Image, Preloaded with Qemu.
I would prefer to use WINE in Linux for any windows programs that I can’t find a OSS version of, but ReactOS is showing some promise as it progresses along.

ie7-earip2.jpg

Microsoft is getting close releasing Internet Explorer and today released IE 7 Release Candidate 1. The release candidate can be downloaded here. You do have to have a legitimate copy of XP to install the program (the install will check for a valid serial number - cracked Windows users are left out). I did briefly check out this version of IE 7 and found it to be huge improvement over IE6. The browser feels light, renders most pages well, and features impressive tab browsing abilities (thumbnails for each tab is kind of neat) and good RSS features. I won’t be using IE 7 often because my main platforms are Linux and OS X, so it is Firefox & Opera for me, but for windows users IE 7 is nice step up from that horrible beast known as IE 6. If you have been using an earlier beta of IE 7, this RC’s most noteworthy features are : improvements in performance, stability, security, and application compatibility. User interface has been polished, support for CSS has been enahanced. For a full list of new features in IE 7 compared to IE 6 click further to read

apple_logo_3.jpg

If you own a 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4 and purchased the computer between October 2003 and August 2006, you should know that Apple is recalling those batteries. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commision about 1.8 million batteries in those Apple notebooks are affected. The batteries were manufactured by Sony and the lithium-ion batteries can overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers. applebatteryrecall.jpgApple has received nine reports of batteries overheating, including two reports of minor burns from handling overheated computers and other reports of minor property damage. No serious injuries were reported as of yet. If you want to find out if your battery needs to be replaced, pull out the battery from the bottom of your notebook and check the serial number. If the first 5 serial numbers matches the numbers on the chart shown on the right, then you should contact Apple (800) 275-2273 and they will send you a replacement battery. Apple recommends after removing the recalled battery from the iBook or PowerBook, consumers should plug in the AC adapter to power the computer until a replacement battery arrives.

The Innocence Mission

Posted by Pandamonium | 1 Comment

innocencemission2.jpg

Luna6 asked me to write a few words about The Innocence Mission to mark the recent reissue of their album Birds of My Neighborhood, so I’ll try my best. For those who know and love them, I’m sure my words will be wholly inadequate. But if you’ve never heard of them before, maybe your interest will be piqued and you would graciously drop in for a visit.

They have been around forever (since 1989 to be exact) releasing six full-length albums plus two albums of covers done for charity; yet for the life of me, I still can’t believe that I had never even heard of their name until 2004 when I stumbled across a brief paragraph-description for their Befriended album buried within the catalogue of my favorite online music store.

I instantly fell in love with Karen Peris’s “transcendently lovely voice”. Each of their recordings are different from their previous efforts, yet are surprisingly and consistently great — the kind of recordings you listen to from beginning to end for the full and enriching effect. If there is a constant to The Innocence Mission, then it would be the wonderful words of Karen Peris seamlessly interlaced in a fabric of the most apt, unique, touching melody delivered with a voice that “communicates with immediacy and directness, speaking to our common sorrows and joys, speaking of everyday miracles”.

cd_birds.jpg

There is a comment I agree with which said “every one of their records seems not like a product, but a gift to the world”. In closing, when asked about their name, she answered, “ ‘Innocence’ stands for all the good things of childhood, the things we should try to hold on to. It’s a state of mind. The mission in the name is a place to us, as opposed to a crusade. The name is just something I thought of one day and we liked it. It made me think of the giant houses in children’s books where you might find a refuge.”

kde-menu2.jpg
OpenSuse along with the KDE team are working on a new KDE start menu for the next openSuse release - 10.2. Not sure if I will like the new KDE new start menu, but nice to see them trying something different at least. For a full mpeg preview of the start menu you can view at here. From viewing the video, It looks a bit like the new start menu in Suse Linux Enterprise Dekstop 10, which is a modified Gnome menu and a bit like the default Windows XP menu. I usually switch to classic view if I have to use XP and in Linux I use Gnome more and more these days, so I’m not exactly hyped about this new start menu in the least. I will check out openSuse 10.2 regardless, when it is released.

On a similar note, the first development snapshot of KDE4, named “Krash,” has been released and more information about that can be viewed here. KDE4 does look very promising and would be really great if it can get released sometime early next year.

After-450.jpg

I don’t often get excited by skins for media players but after installing Ater Skins for XMMS and MPlayer I was …umm…very happy. I don’t even like XMMS all that much, but I use it much more now, just because it looks great on my desktop with the after skins. The skins looks a bit like the black laquer finish on the iPods or black MacBooks. Great stuff. You can download After Skins XMMS skin here and MPlayer skins here.

HOWTO install:

1. extract the tar archive to one of these dirs:

For Mplayer : usr/share/mplayer/skins/ or ~/.mplayer/skins/
For XMMS : usr/share/xmms/skins or ~/.xmms/skins

2. Right click program and select skin browser (xmms = options/skin browser) and select After.

Better late than never I guess, but after a long time a new Azureus client has been released for your torrent needs. One of the major complaints about Azureus has been its high cpu usage and for version 2.5.0.0 that problem seems to have been reduced.
Downloads are available for Linux, Linux AMD64, OS XWindows.

What’s new in Azureus 2.5.0.0

Writely.jpg

The free online word processor known as Writely (that Google has recently purchased) is now available to anyone that signs up for an account here. Although Writely is a basic word processor, the beauty of the program is that you can easily share your documents with other users and store your documents on a central server. Going on vacation? No problem, login to Writely and have all your documents available to you. Very nice program and will edit Word or OpenOffice documents. Nice free app, that benefits Linux/Mac/Windows users.

Features :
*Share documents instantly & collaborate real-time.
*Pick exactly who can access your documents.
*Edit your documents from anywhere.
*Nothing to download — your browser is all you need.
*Store your documents securely online.
*Offsite storage plus data backup every 10 seconds.
*Easy to use.
*Clean, uncluttered screens with a familiar, desktop feel.

A new web app from our humble overloards known as Google has been released and the program does look promising. Google Mobile Maps is like Google Maps but for your cellphone, with nifty real-time traffic reports available for over 30 major U.S. cities. To download the program point the web browser on your cellphone to www.google.com/gmm. Google Mobile Maps currently does not work with Nextel, T-Mobile USA, Brew-enabled phones or Palm devices. To find out if your phone will work with Google Mobile maps you can view the list here.
