EdgyEft-Cover1.jpg

As of October 26, Ubuntu has released their latest Linux operating system, version 6.10 aka Edgy Eft, which can be downloaded here. Ubuntu has been the up and coming star company in the Linux O.S. scene for the last couple of years. They just seem to get more popular with each release and along with their releases getting better with each release. I would dare say they have nearly the cult following like Apple Computers or Google. Ubuntu, as you might be able to tell, is an unorthodox company, even for a company in the Linux scene! Ubuntu was originally founded by Mark Shuttleworth, a South African multi-millionaire, who once paid $20 million to ride into outer space on the Russian Soyuz TM-34 mission.

The company’s name Ubuntu actually derives from the South African (Zulu) concept of ubuntu, which means “I am because you are” or “humanity towards others.” Ubuntu tries to apply that concept into their business model. The companies slogan is “Linux for human beings” and they go as far as to offer to ship for free a copy of their distribution to anyone in the world. The concept of Ubuntu fits perfectly into the world of Linux and open source software. Without the work of others, there would be no way that Linux would be what it is today and the same applies to Ubuntu.

Enough with the background and onto the review of Ubuntu’s Edgy Eft.

FC06-DE-03-509.jpg

I had pretty high expectations for Fedora Core 6 and in some ways they were met. FC 6 certainly is one of the best looking distro’s I have seen, especially for a default installation. Yet, several smaller issues crept into FC 6 that made me wonder how prepared this release was for final release. The problems that I encountered with Fedora Core 6 were not huge issues, but there were enough smaller bugs that made me wonder if this release was rushed. Read more

Mozilla Firefox 2.0

Posted by luna6 | 2 Comments

Firefox1.jpg

Mozilla has just released Firefox 2.0 and their web browser can be downloaded here (Versions for OS X, Linux, and Windows are all available).

Although Firefox 2.0 doesn’t have any new revolutionary features or gui, the web browser does have many refinements that I felt were very good. One of the best features would be the “Resuming Your Browsing Session” feature. If you leave Firefox running and happen to reboot or turn off your computer. When you re-launch Firefox and you select to resume your session from last time, all your open tabs and webpages appear automatically. Sweet. Tab browsing has been improved as well, featuring close icons for each and every open tab in your browser. Also, there is a built in Inline Spell Checker, that will check your spelling as you fill out forms on the web. Sweet.

Plot Synopsis : Byung-Doo is a low-level gangster, barely able to take care of his family and the people under him in his gangster family. His mafia boss frequently short changes Byung-Doo and gives the more lucrative jobs to other people in the organization. Byung-Doo soon decides to take fate into his own hands and improve the situation for himself, his family and his mafia family.

Byung-Doo sits in on a dinner between his boss, Sang-Cheul and the top boss in the mafia group, President Hwang. Hwang complains to Sang-Cheul that he is getting hounded by an attorney that knows more than Hwang would like him to know about his organization. Hwang asks Sang-Cheul if he could fix his problem, but Sang-Cheul politely declines knowing the ramifications from the police force if he attempted such a brazen act. After the meeting, President Hwang asks Byung-Doo to be his chauffeur that evening. When Byung-Doo drives Hwang home, he decides to take the risk and potential rewards of fixing Hwang’s problem permanently.

Meanwhile Byung-Doo meets two people from his grade school days. Min-Ho is an aspiring filmmaker that wants to learn from Byung-Doo about his mafia organization. He is attempting to make his first film which deals with the mafia, but finds that his script lacks originality and authenticity. The other person is Hyun-Ju, a girl that Byung-Doo has always had a crush on, but was never able to get close to. They become better acquainted through Min-Ho and soon develop a rocky relationship, that is burdened by Hyun-Ju’s disapproval over Byung-Doo’s gangster lifestyle.

dirtycarnival.jpg

Movie Review : A Dirty Carnival is a gritty gangster movie, that attempts to offer one of the more realistic portrayals of the mafia in Korea. The film is long (141 minutes) and tries to differentiate itself from past Korean gangster movies with its realistic feel and sub-plots that deals with Byung-Doo and two of his old grade school friends.

While Byung-Doo beats his way up to the higher echelons of his organization he encounters Min-Ho, his old grade school buddy. Min-Ho is working on a script for a gangster film that he hopes to direct, but the script is weak and lacks authenticity. He soon decides to use Byung-Doo’s real life problems to make his script more compelling. Unfortunately Byung-Doo is under the impression that he is helping his friend learn about the characteristics of gangsters, not that he will use Byung-Doo’s problems as the basis for his movie. This leads up to big problems for Byung-Doo when Min-Ho’s film is released.

One of the more memorable aspects of A Dirty Carnival would be the realistic action sequences, which involved a whole lot of gangsters fighting among themselves with baseball bats and sashimi knives. I couldn’t help grimacing with each crack of the bat on someone’s torso or flinch when Byung-Doo’s knife would come out and start stabbing people left and right. Along with these gritty and realistic action sequences, the film also does a great job showing how Byung-Doo raised his group to the higher echelons of the mafia organization. They would use brutal force when necessary and at other times unusual tactics that would usually become successful.

Weaknesses in the movie would be with the two subplots running in the film. Although Min-Ho’s film within a film subplot was interesting at times, the way his relationship with Byung-Doo dissolved seemed forced and not all that believable (seriously, when Byung-Doo threatened Min-Ho in the alley to keep his mouth shut, that should have been the end of it…but hey they can’t end the film there can they?). The other subplot involving Byung-Doo and Hyun-Ju was the familiar gangster falls in love with a “normal” girl and must either get her to accept his ways or leave the organization for her approval. I did feel like this was shown enough times in other gangster films and this one provided nothing special that I havent seen before in those other films.

A Dirty Carnival had a few head scratchers as well : (1) During the wedding ceremony, Byung-Doo followed Sang-Cheul into the bathroom and stabbed him to death. He stabbed him many, many times! How the hell did he manage to do this without getting any blood on his suit? (2) When Byung-Doo and a henchmen were ambushed, they wound up in the back of van tied by rope. How did they manage to burn the rope with a lighter and not have their kidnappers smell that? (3) Min-Ho is taken by Byung-Doo’s no. 2 guy and beaten and threatened. We are now to led to believe that Min-Ho turns on Byung-Doo, but not the no. 2 guy?

A Dirty Carnival will likely appeal to action fans that crave a gritty, realistic mafia movie that provides more than its shares of brutal fight sequences. Although the film is long, it never felt slow and was, mostly, compelling throughout its runtime. The sub-plots in the film were rather weak and took away from my enjoyment of the film, but those sub-plots may actually enhance the film for other people. If you enjoy mafia films, by all means I would say check out A Dirty Carnival.

Plot Synopsis : Jung-Rae is a director/writer that needs to get away from the city environment to concentrate on his script. He asks his friend and coworker to drive him down to the coastal city of Shinduri. Unfortunately, his friend, Chang-Wook, already has plans for the evening…which includes a special date with a girl. The director, Jung-Rae, insists anyways and finally Jung-Rae agrees…if he can bring his girlfriend, Moon-Sook. Jung-Rae says that is fine and they agree to go all together.

Later that day when the director is picked up by Chang-Wook, he is introduced to his girlfriend, who happens to be a big fan of his work. Once they arrive in Shinduri the director and Moon-Sook become better acquainted and quickly become more attracted to each other. Moon-Sook tries to clarify to the director that she is only friends with Chang-Wook, while the director clarifies the situation even more by asking her, “Who would you prefer to be with?” When Moon-Sook answers that it would be the director, they soon find themselves sneaking out together at night and end up sleeping together at another hotel.

The next day the director seems more uptight and makes it known that he is going back to Seoul because the beach town is too empty. He tells Moon-Sook that he needs some time to clear things out in his mind. The director soon returns back to Shinduri and calls Moon-Sook repeatedly on her cellphone. Even though she doesn’t answer the phone, Jung-Rae leaves a message asking her to come back to Shinduri to see him. Soon after the phone call, the director comes across another lady near the beach, that he believes resembles Moon-Sook. While they become more involved, Moon-Sook has now returned to Shinduri.

Movie Review : Don’t let the movie poster fool you into believing that this movie is a Korean Romance/Comedy. Woman on the Beach is directed by Hong Sang-Su (Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Woman Is the Future of Man) which should give you an idea of what this film is like, if you are at all familiar with Korean Cinema.

Woman On The Beach, as with most of Hong Sang-Su’s films, deals with relationships and the fragile psyches behind those relationships. It just so happens that Woman On The Beach may well be Hong Sang-Su most accessible film to date and possibly his best film. This was all the more surprising because the two main characters in the film were not “instantly” like-able characters .

From the first scene, the viewer is introduced to Jung-Rae’s propensity to be self-centered and selfish. His friend had no desire to go to Shinduri, but still Jung-Rae goads him into going, simply because he wants companionship and a ride! It’s irrelevant to him that his friend had already made a date and it “could” be better for him if he brought her along. Even with these faults, there are bigger issues that encompasses Jung-Rae’s mind. That issue would be the image of his ex-wife having sex with another one of his friends prior to their marriage. This image tainted Jung-Rae’s view on life and clouds his ability to concentrate on his work.

The director of the film, Hong Sang-Su, lets it known in his own subtle way that the problems Jung-Rae experiences are self inflicted wounds. While Jung-Rae and Moon-Sook were drinking together and still in their initial flirting stage, Jung-Rae decided to go to his hotel room for a nap. While he doses off into sleep, the sound of the television is discernible, with two baseball announcers talking in the background. The announcers are “coincidentally” discussing the rules for a baseball player that gets intentionally hit by pitch. They say something along the lines of “The batter was a hit by a pitched ball. There’s a strict rule for a baseball player if you let the ball hit you when you could’ve dodged it..its either a ball or strike…rather than a free pass to firstbase.” That would sum up perfectly Jung-Rae’s own self induced trauma over his wife’s pre-marriage sexual relationship.

This changes, somewhat, when he meets Moon-Sook. The conquest part excited Jung-Rae enough, where he forgot about his problems and soon focused only on Moon-Sook. That is until the next morning, when reality came through the curtains along with the sunlight. Jung-Rae, in his self-defensive mode, acted distant with Moon-Sook and eventually broke up their relationship. But he quickly changes his mind and asks for reconciliation. The director did a wonderful job of expressing Jung-Rae’s feelings towards Moon-Sook via the pen and paper diagram he had Jung-Rae draw.

As you can tell by now, Woman On The Beach is filled with images of people in groups of three. This was probably in reference to the director’s idea that human nature is filled with desire for something they do not have. As the people in the film come in groups of three, they eventually seek out to break off into pairs and the volatility of this situation is what attracted people like Jung-Rae to Moon-Sook.

The film ends with another poignant and uplifting message. Moon-Sook calls Jung-Rae and tells him in a matter-of-fact kind of way that she does not want to see him anymore. She then drives off in her car onto the beach in Shinduri. Her car gets stuck in the sand and then two men come over to push her car out of the sand. This was the one time in the movie where a group of three people broke up with an individual leaving happily by themselves. The idea of happiness coming from within and until you are able to find that, the type of despair that inflicted Jung-Rae and Moon-Sook will always linger, was an absolute great way to go out! Very good movie that should be checked out.

Internet Explorer 7

IE7.jpg

Microsoft has released Internet Explorer 7 and you can download it here. That is if you run a legitimate copy of Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. So for users of Windows 95, 98, 2000 and cracked versions of XP/2003 you have one more reason to switch to Linux or at the minium use Firefox. I should note that Internet Explorer 7 is a huge improvement over that aweful monstrosity known as Internet Explorer 6 and it well should be. There hasn’t been a major update to Internet Explorer since 2003! A big thank you goes to out to the Mozilla Firefox team for providing a better alternative and the impetus to the monolith known as Microsoft to upgrade their web browser.

Internet Explorer 7 provides such nice modern amenities as :
*Tabbed Browsing
*Advanced Printing
*RSS Feeds
*Quick Tabs
*Page Zoom
*Anti Phishing Tools.

Definitely all windows users should upgrade. For some screenshots of IE 7 in action and the install procedure click the read the rest of this entry link.
