Interview : Dean & Britta (Luna / Galaxie 500)
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment

Website : Dean & Britta
Free Downloads : Singer Sing
Album Review : Back Numbers
Britta Phillips’ “Top 5 albums of 2007″
LP6 : What were some of the reasons why “Dean & Britta” came into existence?
Britta: Dean had started working on a solo album after Luna finished touring for “Romantica.” He asked me to play some bass on it. I said yes. The rest is history.
LP6 : Back Numbers is such an awesome record! Could you tell us what were some of your inspirations & goals going into the making of Back Numbers?
Britta: Thank you! Well, the covers were certainly inspirations and they give a clue as to what some of our influences are. The goal is always to make the best record that you can with the amount of time and money you have. The music for “Say Goodnight” was something we came up with for “The Squid & The Whale” score. It didn’t end up being used in the film, but I liked it so I wrote some lyrics. I was thinking of Johnny Cash in the chorus. “Singer, Sing” started with just the vocoder drums. Sonic Boom told us how to run our Rhythm Arranger through a vocoder effect. It wasn’t planned at the time, but I really like the mix of organic & electronic sounds on the album.
LP6 : Compared to L’Avventura…vocals on this album seem to feature a lot more of Britta. Was this planned beforehand or was this something that came about during the song making process?
Britta: Yeah, I guess we wanted to share the vocal duties more on this album.
LP6 : How are the song making duties apportioned for Dean & Britta?
Britta: We both just work on stuff we want to work on. “Singer Sing” & “Words You Used To Say,” came out of two “jams” we had at home together. “Crystal Blue” started with a Sonic Boom riff and Dean and I finished it.
LP6 : “The Sun is Still Sunny” seems to have come from the instrumental track “Family Conference” on the soundtrack to Squid and the Whale (btw nice job on that one - enjoyed it infinitely more than Mr. Jealousy). Could you tell us how that song evloved from the instrumental to “The Sun is Still Sunny”?
Britta: It’s the same track, we just extended the verse sections and Dean wrote lyrics. Then we went into the studio with Tony Visconti and Matt Johnson played drums on it. I replaced the bass and I think Dean re-recorded some guitar. It wasn’t intentional on Dean’s part, but I love the the line “it’s Chicken today and feathers tomorrow” because boy’s nickname in “Squid” is “Chicken”. To me, it evokes the end of their family.
LP6 : “White Horses” is such a pretty song. Do you remember when that song was written and what inspired to you write such a tune?
Dean: It was written in the 1960s – not by us – it was the theme song to a children’s TV show named ‘White Horses’. Sonic Boom suggested the track to us. The original TV theme was sung by Jacky aka Jackie Lee. We’re very happy with the way it turned out — our vibraphone player (Sean McCaul) really makes it different.
LP6 : “You Turned My Head Around” sure did come out as a spectacular song. Could you tell us a litte bit about how that song came about?
Dean: I found that Ann Margret 7″ single years ago in Boston. The original was written and produced by Lee Hazlewood, and released on his LHI label.
Britta: I jumped at the chance to sing something high and loud for a change.
LP6 : “Our Love Will Still Be There” would be the first Dean Wareham song I can remember with the word love prominently placed in the lyrics. Is this song perhaps a testament to your personal relationship with each other?
Dean: It could be, but the song is a cover – the original is by the Troggs. But there is at least one Luna song with “love” in the lyrics: “Lovedust”.
LP6 : Britta your cover version of Spectrum’s “How You Satisfy Me” for the compilation “Never Lose That Feeling Vol. 2″ was very impressive, as were Sonic Boom’s remixes for Sonic Souvenirs. Were you a big fan of Spectrum/Spacemen 3 and how did you pick the song “How You Satisfy Me” for that compilation?
Britta: Yes, I was (and am) a big fan. “How You Satisfy Me” was the first Spectrum song I ever heard. Sonic told me it was inspired by the Evie Sands song “I Can’t Let Go.”
LP6 : Britta could you tell us about your background before Luna?
Britta: Before Luna……I played in a couple of bands (Belltower and Ultrababyfat)….did some acting (a movie called “Satisfaction” and some tv….was the singing voice for a cartoon called “Jem & The Holograms.”
LP6 : How did you feel during the auditions for Luna?
Britta: I was exhausted from practicing Luna songs by myself for 2 days straight. I was nervous, of course, and thought that I could have done better (one always thinks that after an audition). Then they had me come back. I didn’t know that they asked everyone back for a second audition so I was pretty confidant about getting the job. Still, when Lee called me with the news that I was going on tour with them in a few days, I was ecstatic. Then I had to learn 20 more songs and our first show was televised.
LP6 : The last track on L’Avventura was called “Indian Summer”…but not the “Indian Summer” song that Luna covered by the Beat Happening. Curious to know how that song came about with the same title as your other “Indian Summer” track??
Dean: There are several songs titled “Indian Summer”. The one on L’Avventura is by the Doors, from their Morrison Hotel album. I did enjoy creating a little confusion by recording two songs with the same title.
LP6 : When you go on tour, is there something that you always look forwards to?
Britta: Doing nothing all day. And I’m really excited about singing since I didn’t get to do so much of that in Luna.
LP6 : On the same note, something you dread?
Britta: Getting stuck sitting around in a club for hours because there’s not enough time to go back to the hotel.
Long drives…..
LP6 : What was the most memorable concert that you guys have performed and why?
Britta: The last Luna show at the Bowery Ballroom. It was emotionally loaded and I think we played really well.
LP6 : Dean any chance Galaxie 500 would get together for a tour or a new album?
Dean: There are no plans for such a thing.
LP6 : What are some new records that you are particularly impressed with?
Britta: I’m more impressed with particular songs than whole albums. I like “Young Folks” by Peter, Bjorn & John and “Magic Touch” by Kudu. And I like what I’ve heard of The Budos Band.
Dean: My favorite band right now is the Sandpebbles, who are from Melbourne, Australia. I played on one track on their new disc, Atlantis Regrets Nothing, but I also love the previous album, Ghost Transmissions.
LP6 : Compared to about 10 years ago, before the prevalence of the internet, it was a lot harder to discover new music. You had either magazines, television or radio to discover new music. In a way, bands that you did discover back then were cherished more. Nowadays with the wealth of information available from the internet, it almost seems like bands are like a commodity. Would you agree with this assessement?
Britta: Yes. I think there is too much of everything (especially bands!) and this makes every thing less valuable.
Dean: Bands (and the records they make) have always been a commodity, but today it seems we are inundated. In 1988 it was hard to get signed, even to an indie label. Now anyone can declare that they have a band simply by virtue of recording a few songs at home and setting up a Myspace page. I guess we have to take the bad with the good here…
LP6 : Do you guys keep up with the latest latest in digital music tools like, Pro Tools & Powerbooks, or do you guys prefer to work with analog equipment?
Britta: There’s not enough room for analog equipment in a NYC apartment. I enjoy working with Logic and Macs. A Fairlight sampler cost $100,000 in the 80s. Now GarageBand puts that technology to shame.
LP6 : I remember reading in the liner notes for the Galaxie 500 box set, that Conan O’Brien was a neighbor of the band at Harvard and was also a drummer. Dean, do you recall how good he was on the drums and what his particular musical tastes were like?
Dean: I never saw him play the drums – he just let us borrow his kit. All I know about his musical tastes is that he is a big fan of Jonathan Richman. He had him on the show all the time in the early years.
LP6 : Thank you Dean & Britta…

Pelle Carlberg, former leadsinger of Edson, is back with a brilliant new album on March 28. “In a nutshell” is full of his characteristic sharp, wry humor and heartfelt folk-pop. Equally catchy and intimate pop songs written with an ease rarely seen since Belle & Sebastians early years.
The first single from the album is a duet with Norwegian singer Ida Maria called “I love you you imbecile” which will be released on February 28

***Going Places contains samples recorded by people from 15 different countries. Some of them will be posted here soon as some of them have pretty amazing stories.
Montag, Antoine Bédard’s alter ego (from Montreal), is one of the most promising musicians of the Canadian electronic music scene. His first album, entitled “Are you a Friend?”, was released on Gooom Disques (M83, Cyann & Ben, Abstrackt Keal Agram) in 2002 - an album of memories expressed through a discreet and deeply nostalgic sound where analog pop meets digital technology. With “Alone, not alone”, Montag goes further in his exploration of themes such as memory but with more confidence this time. His music is just as intimate and personal but with more emphasis on acoustic sounds which bring more richness to his musical universe than ever. As a kind of orchestra-man, Montag offers short compositions with a micro-symphonic feel and a fundamentally emotional dimension. His music has seduced M83, resulting in their first collaboration on ” Dead Cities , Red Seas and Lost Ghosts”. Antoine has also recently completed string arrangements for their forthcoming album.
In 2003, Antoine released an EP on UK ’s Aï records, toured Canada twice, played live in France and was invited to perform at Montreal ’s prestigious Mutek Festival. His live performances also include opening for bands such as Broadcast, Lali Puna, Hood, Stars and Momus.
On “Alone, Not Alone”, Montag delivers some orchestral pop where vocals have a noticeable importance - Antoine’s passion for vintage atmospheres and naive melodies find a balanced mix with the album’s electronic elements. Having learned the violin as a child, it is easy to understand why Montag wanted to include classical instrumentation in his recordings. Used to working on his own, this time Antoine wanted to involve his friends in the making of the album. Collaborators include James Cardiff (bass and electronics - of Broadcast), Francis Amireault (drums - of Cian Éthrie), Amy Millan (vocals, of Stars and Broken Social Scene), Ariel Engle (vocals). The album was mastered by Sixtoo (Ninja Tune), one of Montreal best known hip hop artists. Through these collaborations, Montag brings a different meaning to the album’s title.

AVEY TARE & KRIA BREKKAN (Mum & Animal Collective) - Pullhair Rubeye
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment

Free Downloads : “ sis around the sándmill”
Avey Tare is Dave Portner of Animal Collective and Kria Brekkan is Kristin Anna Valtysdottir formerly of the band múm. The two met a few years back and started playing music together in the summer of 2005. Recently they married and now live together in New York City .
Avey Tare and Kria Brekkan recorded their debut collaboration “Pullhair Rubeye” with guitars and piano on an eight track in their practice space in Brooklyn . Then they traveled to upstate New York where the record was mixed down onto a two track borrowed from a friend who bought it at a garage sale for a dollar. Just as the two were completing the mix, the two track broke down and Avey and Kria didn’t hear the mixes until two months later when they obtained another two track. After this short vacation, they were surprised by the sounds they had made.
Regardless of HOW they made their sounds, Avey Tare and Kria Brekkan’s “Pullhair Rubeye” is a motley collection of fun and somber songs. Some of the tracks are instrumental, textured, and trancelike. They sound like they could come from another world. Other songs are lyrically based, calmer, more introspective. These sound like direct transmissions from within.
