Capgun Coup added to the Noise Pop Festival 2008
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment
The 16th annual Noise Pop Festival in San Francisco will commence on February 26 and run through March 2. Although the list of acts are not finalized, some of the more noteworthy bands playing this year are The Magnetic Fields, Mountain Goats, Kelly Stoltz, Tilly & The Wall, Blitzen Trapper, Fleet Foxes, and Fu Manchu. A band just added to that list is Capgun Coup, out of Omaha, Nebraska. They have a crazy, fun style that should appeal to indie pop fans of the Unicorns and Neutral Milk Hotel. If you want to check out some of their stuff, well good golly, look below!
Free Downloads: “Oh, My God”, “My Tears Cure Cancer“, “Bobby Chops and The Do-Gooders”
From Team Love Records: The story starts three years ago in suburban Omaha, Nebraska, where Elsasser and Martin began playing music together. Mutual boredom and an interest in avant noise would fuel the duo’s early collaborations, but after a move downtown and after the addition of two members (Matz on
bass and Ohlsson on drums), Capgun Coup became less interested in white noise, and completely enamored with pop.
The result is an album that is as much an homage to basement shows and house parties as it is to the indie pop tradition. The rich interplay between Elsasser’s spacey noise samples and Martin’s pop sensibility creates a backbone and organization that has only been solidified with the addition of Ohlsson and Matz.
Nebraskafish, recorded over twelve months in the band’s home city of Omaha is a snapshot of Capgun’s evolution from early minimal folk (”Oh My Mod”) to darker, more atmospheric pieces (such as “Social Security Number”).
According to Martin and Elsasser, the album is an attempt to “tie the last two years of songwriting together … it’s music meant to be heard in a close setting with friends.” Preferably a hundred of them, all dancing, in a sweaty, musty basement. Just don’t request a Minutemen cover.

Gimp 2.4 User Manual releaed
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment
Just one month ago, Gimp 2.4.0 was released, then a week later Gimp 2.4.1 was released. Since that time I have used Gimp 2.4.x regularly and find it to be one of the best open source applications out there. There has been a few times where I didn’t understand how to do a certain task, so I would try to browse the Gimp User Manual. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a user manual. But, today the Gimp team has announced the release of their 2.4 User Manual, which can be downloaded here.
From the Gimp Team:
-
After three months of work, the documentation team is proud to announce a new
release of the user manual for GIMP 2.4. This release features a lot of
improvements, in particular:
* documentation for GIMP 2.4
* new translations (incl. spelling and grammar fixes) for Russian,
Norwegian, Italian, Spanish and lots of bugfixes
* an alternate Stylesheet for HTML
You can download gimp-help-2.4.0 from:
ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/help/
The manual is written in DocBook/XML. Please help us to improve it and
to fix grammar and spelling errors. Every contributor who wants to help
us by providing DocBook/XML patches or just proof reads the manual is
very welcome.
Thanks to the contributions from Vitaly Lomov, Axel Wernicke, Ulf-D.

Google will apply to participate in January’s FCC spectrum auction
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment
Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, has mentioned in the past that Google would participate in the upcoming FCC’s spectrum auction of the soon to be available 700 megahertz (MHz) band, if certain open platforms were adopted (Google’s open letter to FCC can be read here). Today, Google has officially announced that they will particiipate in the upcoming January 28th auction. They have pledged to bid a minimum of $4.6 billion dollars.
Google announced today that it will apply to participate in the Federal Communications Commission’s upcoming auction of wireless spectrum in the 700 megahertz (MHz) band.
As part of the nationally mandated transition to digital television, the 700 MHz spectrum auction — which begins January 24, 2008 — will free up spectrum airwaves for more efficient wireless Internet service for consumers. Advocacy by public interest groups and Google earlier this year helped ensure that regardless of which bidders win a key portion of the spectrum up for auction (the so-called “C Block”), they will be required to allow their users to download any software application they want on their mobile device, and to use any mobile devices they would like on that wireless network. The winner must ensure these rights for consumers if the reserve price of $4.6 billion for the C Block is met at auction.
“We believe it’s important to put our money where our principles are,” said Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO, Google. “Consumers deserve more competition and innovation than they have in today’s wireless world. No matter which bidder ultimately prevails, the real winners of this auction are American consumers who likely will see more choices than ever before in how they access the Internet.”
Schmidt also praised the leadership of FCC Chairman Kevin Martin and his fellow commissioners for adopting the new rights for consumers earlier this year.
Google’s formal application to participate in the 700 MHz auction will be filed with the FCC on Monday, December 3, 2007 — the required first step in the auction process. Google’s application does not include any partners.

Adobe and Yahoo! unveil “Ads for Adobe PDF Powered by Yahoo!” beta
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment
Yahoo and Adobe announced today a new partnership to bring contextual advertisements to Adobe’s PDF files. Publisher’s using the Adobe PDF format, can now opt-in through “Ads for Adobe PDF Powered by Yahoo!,” to have ads placed within an adjacent panel next to their content in their published PDF documents. The ads appear only with Adobe’s Reader and Adobe Acrobat products. More information provided below.
How it Works
To join the program, publishers must register online, and then simply upload their Adobe PDF content so that it can be ad-enabled before distributing PDFs as they do today. Ads can only be displayed within Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat, in a panel adjacent to the content so that they do not disrupt the viewing experience. Every time the PDF content is viewed, contextual ads are dynamically matched to the content of the document. The publisher can then monitor performance through detailed reports. Publishers already committed to participating in the Ads for Adobe PDF Powered by Yahoo! beta program include: IDG InfoWorld, Wired, Pearson’s Education, Meredith Corporation, Reed Elsevier and many more.
“Since moving to a Web-only format earlier this year, we at InfoWorld have been able to apply a laser focus to cutting-edge solutions for the electronic distribution of our content,” said Allen Fear, director of Online Content at InfoWorld. “The unique combination of Adobe PDF and Yahoo! ads presents a new way of generating revenue from many of our existing products. We are excited about the opportunity to work with Adobe and Yahoo! on what we believe is a solution that significantly enhances the value of PDF distribution.”
Pricing, Availability and System Requirements
Ads for Adobe PDF Powered by Yahoo! is a free service and does not require the purchase or installation of software. The program, currently in beta, is open to US-based publishers who produce English content. Publishers can apply to participate in the program at http://advision.webevents.yahoo.com/adobe/. Ads for Adobe PDF Powered by Yahoo! supports PDF content created in Adobe Acrobat 8 and earlier versions. For more information including system requirements please visit http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/adsforpdf/.

The Shadow Spirit (Moryo no Hako)
Posted by luna6 | Leave a Comment

Movies: The Shadow Spirit | Moryo no Hako
Release Date: December 22, 2007
Country: Japan
Director: Masato Harada
Starring: Shinichi Tsutsumi, Kippei Shiina, Hiroshi Abe
Runtime: 127 Min
Editor Rating: Not Yet Rated
Opening in Japan, on December 22, 2007, will be “Moryo no Hako” aka “The Shadow Spirit.” The movie is based off the second installment of famed Japanese mystery writer Natsuhiko Kyogoku’s “Kyogokudo” series. Natsuhiko Kyogoku is frequently billed as the “Japanese Edgar Allan Poe” and his 1995 novel “Moryo no Hako” went on to receive the Mystery Writers Association of Japan Award. The first novel in his “Kyogokudo” series, “Ubume no natsu” was also turned into a movie in 2005.
“The Shadow Spirit” brings back most of the primary cast members from the 2005 movie “Ubume No Natsu” to reprise their respective roles (Shinichi Tsutsumi, Hiroshi Abe, Hiroyuki Miyasako and Rena Tanaka). Masatoshi Nagase, who played Tatsumi Sekiguchi, is replaced by Kippei Shiina due to health reasons.
In “The Shadow Spirit,” used book seller and onmyouji (specialists in magic and divination) Kyogukudo (Shinichi Tsutsumi)join forces with Private Eye Enokizu (Hiroshi Abe), who has the special power to see into people’s memories, writer Sekiguchi (Kippei Shiina) and police officer Kiba (Hiroyuki Miyasako). A series of stuffed boxes appear in post-war Tokyo, all containing the mutilated bodies of attractive young girls. The group believes the boxes may be the result of a mysterious psychic who prays to the boxes and an even weirder, box shaped like, building. The search for answers gets even more heated when the daughter of a famous ex-actress suddenly disappears.
Popular Japanese rock band “Tokyo Jihen” has been enlisted to compose the theme song for “The Shadow Spirit.”
