elgato.jpg This simple how to is for anyone interested in streaming recorded television shows from their Mac computer (using EyeTV software) to across the internet and onto their iPhone or iPod Touch. With EyeTV 2.5 or higher you can use their PVR software to stream recorded television shows across your local LAN with their “WIFI Access” feature. What’s not well documented is that you can just as easily stream those shows across the internet to your iPhone, iPod Touch, select smartphones and other laptops/desktops. The system requirements to stream shows are :

scrabulous.pngWe here are Lunapark6 are huge advocates of Scrabble and there has been many a night where Luna6 and I qi, xi, and qat it out until ungodly hours of the night. So suffice to say it saddens us deeply that Hasbro, the makers of Scrabble, are attempting to shut down our beloved playground: Scrabulous.

roxio-logo.jpgI use my Macbook for a lot of tasks, but one task I haven’t done much is CD/DVD creation. Normally, when I have to make burn an audio CD or backup data to DVD I use K3B that runs on my Linux desktop. It’s free and does the job. Well I received a copy of the latest Roxio Toast 8.0.3 Titanium for review and figured to give it a shot. After spending a day with the program I’m happy to report that Toast 8 Titanium doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but for the basics it does a fantastic job.

Mythbuntu is a relatively new Ubuntu derivative aimed squarely at the HTPC enthusiasts. The distro consists of modified versions of XFCE/Xubuntu and MythTV. While MythTV has always been one of the best HTPC platforms around, it certainly hasn’t been one of the the easiest to install. With Mythbuntu 7.10, all that is starting to change.

Fedora 8 - Review

Posted by luna6 | 53 Comments

Fedora 8 is the latest release from the Fedora project and it is just packed with a slew of exciting new features. Some of the more notable features are Pulse Audio (new Linux Sound System), Codec Buddy, Online-Desktop, Compiz and Gnome 2.20. Fedora 8 also offers a new theme (unique to Fedora) and more visual treats for the desktop user. After using Fedora 8 from the various Release Candidates to the final Fedora 8 release, I came away impressed with the overall release, but wished a few quirks and bugs were ironed out before the final release.

OS X 10.5 Leopard builds upon the solid OS X 10.4 foundation and refines all the rough edges of Tiger to make for one truly spectacular operating system. As nice as 10.4 Tiger was, the OS had quite a few quirks. The way different applications had different “look and feel” bothered me. Finder was clunky and my least favorite file manager on any operating system. Spotlight seemed slow at times and didn’t work with boolean queries. Finding an open network with Tiger’s wireless applet was a chore. All of these quirks have been ironed out in Leopard and there are also plenty of new features to get excited about. In particular Spaces, Time Machine, Quick Look, Stacks, and the new & improved Dock gives Leopard the feel of a true cutting edge modern operating system.

Introduction
About twice I year I decide to cash in on my paid time off at work and plan a vacation for my girlfriend and I. In the past we haphazardly decide where to go maybe only days in advance, find friends to stay with or find the cheapest Hotels we can find and off we go. As you can imagine a trip like this can be chaotic and yields many surprises so this time around we decided to do it the “right” way. By the “right” way I mean planning out the route in advance, booking hotels online, checking websites for deals and planning out our adventure. Through this experience I gave gained a vast wealth of knowledge on how to save money booking a trip online and plan to impart this knowledge on to you, our dear readers.

I’ll cut to the chase and say from the start that Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) Desktop Edition is simply the best desktop operating system that I have ever used. From installation, to setup, to regular everyday use Gutsy is just a thing of beauty. I have been keeping up with the release since its initial rocky Alpha period, to the polished final Release Candidate released on October 15, 2007 and then apt-get upgrading to the final release. The end result is that the Ubuntu team has put together everything that you could possibly want in a desktop operating system and more.

Like many millions of other Americans I’ve got a problem: I’m fat. I’d like to say that I didn’t really have a choice in the matter as from a young age like plenty of others I was raised on TV dinners because my Mom was a lousy cook. However, the fact of a matter is we all have a choice on how we maintain our bodies at any age so it’s no excuse. We need to get motivated and get out there and get in shape! Now you might be asking yourself “what does this have to do with anything?” There is of course a simple answer: Technology.

openSUSE is a community-driven project sponsored by Novell – similar to Fedora and RedHat. I haven’t used SUSE in quite sometime and with the release of their latest version 10.3, it seemed to be a good time to see how they have progressed.

The installation procedure for openSUSE 10.3 hasn’t changed a lot since I last used SUSE. I always thought SUSE made some of the best default splash screens in Linux and again I was impressed by the initial welcome screen for the installation.

The technological wonder known as the Apple iPod Touch has arrived in retail stores and we got lucky enough to do a hands on evaluation of the 16 GB unit. When first holding the device you do get a sense that your holding a device from the future. Elegantly styled like most of Apple products, the Apple iPod Touch, along with its iPhone sibling, seems to be the first true handheld device of the 21st century. Grand statement eh? When you actually use one of these things thats the kind gee-whiz thoughts that will pass through your mind. Even with all the technological marvels the iPod Touch displays, the unit isn’t a perfect device. This was intentional, as Apple intentional crippled PDA & VOIP capabilities of the device to prevent cannibalization of the iPhone sales.

ipod-nano.jpg Apple has recently refreshed their entire Apple iPod line and the most notable revision would be to the iPod Nano. The form factor has taken a dramatic change, from the long chewing gum stick form in the prior generations to a wider but shorter form factor. While in pictures the iPod Nano looks somewhat “chubby”, actually seeing the Nano up close is a whole another thing. The Nano has a sharp metallic sheen and looks just absolutely fantastic. We tested out the Teal model 8 GB Nano and loved everything about it, except one area.

Elgato Turbo.264

Posted by luna6 | 3 Comments

turbo264-02.jpg Elgato Systems, the maker of the very impressive EyeTV, has released another cool nifty device for the Mac platform. The Turbo.264 is a thumb size USB stick video encoder that accelerates encodings for the iPod, iPhone, AppleTV, or PSP formats. Turbo.264 also comes bundled with its own elegant software to manage those encodings. The unit is especially well suited for Mac Mini, MacBook and iMac owners that encodes video often but would like to free up resources for other tasks. Not bad for a suggested retail price of $99.

ubuntulogo.pngUbuntu’s Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) slated for an October 18th release, has released their alpha “Tribe 5″ version - which includes a Feature Freeze for the Gutsy development cycle. What that means in layman’s term is that while the software is still in heavy development there won’t be any new features added to Gutsy Gibbon. As for the new features added in Gutsy Gibbon there are plenty, most of which are particularly well suited for new users to Linux. Some of the more notable new features are a Graphical Configuration tool for X, improvements in plug-in handling for Mozilla Firefox, revamped printing system with PDF printing by default, fast user switching, new desktop search (Tracker) application and the new AppArmor security framework.
