While Feist is busy working on the follow up to her simply gorgeous album Let It Die, the good folks at Arts & Crafts has released Open Season, one of the better remix albums to have come out, yes indeed I am satisfied. Open Season has the ubiquitous roster of talented folks (the Postal Service, Mocky, Gonzales) remixing, as well as unreleased tracks and a strange cover version of Peaches’ “Lovertits” (would have paid a million dollars in karma points if Feist sang “Set it Off”). There are 4 different versions of “Mushaboom” on the album and the remixes done by Mocky and the Postal Service are infectiously good. “Lonely Lonely” (Frisbee’d Mix) would be the standout track for me and I would dare say it is better then the original, having a fat bass line that pulsates with dreamy coolness while Feist’s voice sounds like something other worldly. “Gatekeeper” (The One Room One Hour Mix) was absolutely lovely, not really changing the song structure, but more like adding additional layers of jazzy instrumentation. “Inside & Out” (Apostle of Hustle UnMix) is exactly as described, “unmixed” …well they could have called it the Cat Power Mix. The remix throws away all of the 70’s r&b flavored instrumentation of the original song and adds instead an acoustic guitar and lets Feist’s voice take center stage. The three VV mixes (One Evening/When I Was A Young Girl/Mushaboom) all sucked which ruined an otherwise great remix album, but since they are the last three tracks on the album you can easily ignore the songs. Open Season is definitely one of the better remix albums to have come out, just stay away from the VV Remixes and you will be extremely satisfied (Sha-boom Sha-boom).
