Following on the heels of 2004’s “Young Prayer,” Panda Bear (from the Animal Collective) releases his third solo album called “Person Pitch.” While “Young Prayer” was mostly a somber acoustic album, recorded shortly after the death of his father, “Person Pitch” is much more of a testament to the truly exotic and complex depth of sounds that Panda Bear is able to produce. Imagine if you will Brian Wilson commissioned to score the soundtrack to Alice in Wonderland and thats a bit of what you can expect on this audacious third album by Panda Bear.

The Good : Person Pitch has sounds that are just awesome. Those sounds sometimes takes the form of perfect pop songs, like “Comfy in Nautica,” “Bros,” “Take Pills” and “Carrots.” “Comfy In Nautica” is noticeable for Panda Bear’s voice just reverberating like someone singing within a massive cave or cathedral. Layered underneath his Brian Wilson inspired vocals are just these sparse industrial percussion sounds that keeps in time with Panda Bear’s sing-a-long vocals. That one is as sweet as some of the best songs by the Russian Futurists. “Bros” is no doubt the crowning achievement on the record. An epic song of sorts that spans 12 and a half minutes. By the way, what the hell is singing about? “I’m not going …I’m not…I’m…” not quite sure what he is singing about, but regardless, the song just contains some of the more luxurious sounds you are likely to hear. In other words this record doesn’t have to be played backwards for it to stand out. No sir, I do believe that Mr. Panda Bear functions on a totally different – unregulated by the government – frequency than us regular folks and as a result you get the creativity of Person Pitch. Or his uniqueness could come from whatever brand of cereal he eats in the morning. (Fruit Loops, Frosted Flakes, or Cheerios would be my guess?)

The Bad : “Bros” is no doubt the crowning achievement for the record. An epic songs of sorts that spans 12 and a half minutes. 12 and a half minutes! If the song was shortened in half the possibilities are endless. Probably, the world would come to a screeching halt, everyone freezes in their places, while I attain the super powers of flying around the world in musical bliss. The song is just that good. Whoa-oh-ohhh! A bigger gripe would be with the song “Good Girl.” As someone who doesn’t eat Fruit Loops or Cheerios cereal in the mornings and functions on the same frequency as the masses, I find that song a little too out there, a little too wacky, the bongos looped on repeat too annoyingly for my own personal tastes. In fact if my neighbor played that song all the time, they would come home one day to find their stereo missing forever.

Person Pitch, sans the annoying track “Good Girl,” would be one of the better albums of this year, last year, or next year. The sounds and songs created by Panda Bear for Person Pitch are just mindblowing. If you are familiar with the Russian Futurists “Let’s Get Ready To Crumble” record, you could say this one takes the sounds found on that record and drives it into the 4th dimension.
